Reading Rooms – ‘The Old Man of the Sea’ by Maeve Brennan

‘The Old Man of the Sea’ is a 1955 short story by the Irish writer Maeve Brennan. It tells of a Dublin family who are visited by an old man selling apples. Fearing the man may turn to begging without their patronage, the mother buys apples from the man. However, he begins to return every week and the mother begins to buy far more apples than she can use out of obligation. It was chosen for its themes of charity, doing the right thing, sharing/ co-operation/ community, kindness, and optimism
Verbal’s Reading Rooms programme uses the power of storytelling to help people create new connections, express their feelings and learn more about the feelings of the people around them. Prepare to have a laugh and make new friendships by reading great stories together from around the world
