Reading Rooms – ‘Gentrification’ by Sherman Alexie

Gentrification is a 2009 short story by the Native American writer Sherman Alexie. It tells of a white man who lives in a predominantly black neighbourhood and spots a dirty mattress on the pavement, which he decides to take to the dump. He returns home expecting thanks from the neighbours who left it there, but to his surprise they are angry at his presumption. It was selected for its themes of race relations, classism, gentrification, and community relations.
Verbal’s Reading Rooms programme uses the power of storytelling to help people create new connections, express their feelings and learn more about the feelings of the people around them. Prepare to have a laugh and make new friendships by reading great stories together from around the world.
